a human-centered approach

The whole person. The whole context. The whole picture.

Sharla Cook, LMFT-A

Sharla Cook is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate who practices from the belief that the stories we carry about ourselves are not fixed. She works with individuals, couples, and families navigating transitions, relational ruptures, and the kind of quiet overwhelm that accumulates when life's demands outpace a person's sense of self. Her clients are driven, intelligent people who have managed everything asked of them -- and arrived at a point where managing is no longer enough.

Shar practices remotely throughout Connecticut, with New York licensure expected in fall 2026. She offers individual sessions, couples and family therapy, group therapy, and Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy. She also advises organizations building AI tools for emotionally complex or high-stakes contexts, and ethical AI governance.

The Approach

Narrative therapy is built on the idea that people are more than any single story told about them. The work begins with context -- exploring the relationships, expectations, pressures, and histories that have shaped the patterns a person brings to therapy. From there, it becomes possible to identify strengths, open new possibilities, and move toward a way of living that reflects who a person actually wants to be.

Areas of Focus
01
Chronic Illness and Disability

Identity, grief, and agency for people navigating bodies that have changed. Shar brings both clinical training and personal experience living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome to this work.

02
Family Estrangement

One of the most unwitnessed forms of grief. Working with both people who have distanced and those who have been left, without assigning right or wrong to either.

03
Religious Trauma

For people rebuilding identity, relationship, and meaning after leaving a high-control religion or faith community. GCRR certified.

04
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy

KAP combines neuroplasticity-enhancing properties of ketamine with focused therapeutic work. Offered through a coordinated care model with Better U.

05
Couples and Family Therapy

Working with relational systems rather than individuals in isolation. Useful when communication has broken down or when the problem lives between people, not inside one of them.

06
AI and Human-Centered Systems

Fractional consulting for organizations building AI tools that interact with people in emotionally complex or high-stakes contexts. This work grows directly from clinical practice.
